Douglas Crockford, a JavaScript architect at Yahoo and the man behind JSON, the JavaScript Object Notation, says he welcomes a browser war if it will bring innovation in the browser space and move the Web forward. Crockford says the browser war between Microsoft and Netscape moved the Web forward but introduced bugs into the network. However, this time standards and the marketplace will keep browser makers in line. Microsoft's complacency after winning the browser war opened the door for innovation by others such as Mozilla and now Google with its Chrome browser.

Google's Chrome Web browser may be a highlight for open-source application development. Yet Google has moved to quell concerns that the EULA afforded Google a little too much control with regard to what happens to the information people entered into the browser window. Google's Omnibox also raises privacy concerns, but these don't seem to have much merit. Are you comfortable using Google Chrome?
News
Google Chrome just launched to beta, but it's clear from comments from Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page that they consider Chrome a major step in application development along Google's path to slay the dragon that is Microsoft Windows. This path will take Google into the heart of cloud computing, which will propel Web services on desktops, notebooks and mobile devices.
News
Google co-founder Sergey Brin says the new Chrome Web browser is not the Web operating system many people see it as, but acknowledges it will get more robust through the open-source community under the Chromium project. Microsoft and other search engines and Web services providers must be wary about this evolution in application development. Google may be treading lightly with Chrome now, but the browser, combined with Google's search and Apps, could end up being a big threat to Microsoft Windows' market share.

Enterprise organizations are tapping the benefits not only of using open-source software, but of contributing to it by using the Eclipse model. The Eclipse Swordfish, Tigerstripe, Open Financial Market Platform and Open System Engineering Environment projects are all based on code contributed by enterprises that use open-source technology.

In a battle between two search engines, Google and Wikia Search are letting users rank search results. While Google's experiment is random, Wikipedia and Wikia Founder Jimmy Wales says Wikia Search is about building a community using simple Web services tools such as ranking and tagging to let users influence search results. Google has no timetable for its search ranking feature and isn't saying how it works.

UPDATED: Cisco Systems acquired PostPath, a Microsoft Exchange e-mail storage competitor, and heads down the path of a big-time "co-opetition" to handle enterprise e-mail against a longtime partner, Microsoft. PostPath uses augmented open-source software and an optional appliance that plugs directly into a data center to offer a lower-cost, in-the-cloud e-mail server alternative to Microsoft Exchange. Exchange has long been known as one of the most complicated business software packages that IT personnel handle.

U.S.-CERT is warning of attacks targeting Linux-based infrastructures using compromised SSH keys. After access is gained to the system, local kernel exploits are used to gain root access. A rootkit is then installed to steal more SSH keys. The attack could be related to a flaw affecting Debian-based encryption keys discovered earlier this year.

Mozilla is launching the experimental Ubiquity Web service under an open-source license, providing integrations with Google, Wikipedia, Yahoo, YouTube, Amazon.com, Digg and Twitter. In a nod to mobile and wireless security, Google Android advocates explain why the SDK for the forthcoming Android mobile operating system won't include Google Talk and Bluetooth wireless support. GTalkService just wasn't safe as a Remote Procedure Call, while the Bluetooth API just wasn't finished. Both are admitted failures to finish APIs that could have proved useful, but expect Android to produce a new RPC system and support Bluetooth in the future.
